Platinum Follicle Award for Jerzy Kolasiński

XXVI World Congress of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery took place in Hollywood, LA 10 – 14 October, 2018. ISHRS is an world’s largest association on the field of reconstruction of hair in all its aspects. It has a number of international committees.

The Society’s annual, wonderful and extremely festive Red Carpet Dinner & Award Ceremony takes place at the Dolby Theater (commonly known for the Oscar awards).

The award is presented by ISHRS President, Sungjoo Hwang from South Korea.

Each year, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) honors the significant contribution to the Society’s development and achievement in the field of science and education. This year, we’re proud to announce that Dr Jerzy Kolasinski was presented this prestigious award. He is the first Pole who joined the worlds elite of over a dozen leaders of hair restoration surgery.

This award coped Dr Kolasiński’s 34-year work in the field of hair reconstructive surgery.

It is worth noting that during the ceremony awards were also given in the category “Most ISHRS Opertion Restore Cases Award” dedicated to surgeons who spare their time and skills for free reconstructive treatment for disadvantaged patients – OperationRestore Pro-Bono Program. In this category Dr Jerzy Kolasiński was also the winner. In this year he performed the most of Pro-Bono repair operations.

During the meeting, the regulation of the treatments in the field of hair restoration surgery in different regions of the world was discussed. ISHRS plays an important role in supporting all societies. Thanks to their activity, hair restoration surgery is developing dynamically worldwide. The main aim of the Polish Society of Hair Restoration Surgery is the education of new generations of doctors interested in hair restoration surgery, so this meeting fits perfectly in this process.

The Jury consisting of prominent personalities of the Polish medicine awarded the title of Manager of the Year in Health Protection – in the category of Non-public Health Care Center to Dr Jerzy Kolasinski in recognition for his 27-year-long work in the field of non-public health protection and creation of such an exemplary medical company as Klinika Kolasinski. The award ceremony took place on December 14, 2011 in the Museum of John Paul II Collection Porczynski Gallery in Warsaw. The meeting was dignified by the Speaker of the Sejm (the Lower House of the Polish Parliament) Ewa Kopacz and Health Minister Bartosz Arłukowicz, who personally presented this year leaders in medicine with the awards.

The following day, September 3, the Global Council of HRS Societes Meeting was organized. It was the meeting of the presidents of particular societies of hair restoration surgery from the entire world. The Polish Society was represented by Małgorzata Kolenda, MD (present president of the Polish Society) and Jerzy Kolasiński MD (its former president). The meeting participants exchanged their experience in terms of particular Societies’ activities in different parts of the world.

On Thursday, September 4, the session started. The first important event was a general assembly of the ISHRS during which a new board was elected. It is a pleasure to inform you that Jerzy Kolasiński won second term. The following days were abundant in lectures, reports, panel discussions, courses and presentations of the patients. They confirmed a huge progress which had been made in terms of hair restoration surgery in recent years. A full coverage of this event can be found on the first page. Dr Kolasiński was also a lecturer. He provided a course on extremelly difficult cases of alopecia, and one of the most interesting plenary sessions on the comparison and contrast of the two basic methods of hair transplants extraction, namely strip technique and FUE. He also presented his research paper on the application of the Trichoscan technique in the process of evaluation of the donor area. The paper aroused a huge interest the result of which was a proposal made by Walter Unger, MD, who asked dr Kolasiński to write a chapter on the evaluation of the donor area in the latest edition of the book titled Hair Transplantation.

The Society’s Annual Meeting was accompanied by numerous get-togethers which are the best way to integrate the medical world. The whole event ended with a formal banquet during which many prizes and honorable mentions were awarded. On saying goodbye, the following day, everybody wished to see each other next year, in Amsterdam (the venue of the next ISHRS assembly) , and in Poznan at the next year’s ISHRS workshops.

We may hope that what happened in Poznań at the beginning of October will become the beginning of further development of anti-aging medicine in Poland.

The following days were abundant in interesting sessions during which a lot of issues referring to hair restoration surgery were discussed. It should be emphasized that more often hair cloning is examined and it may be implemented in the nearest future. Saturday, Septmeber 29, belonged to Dr. Kolasinski since he delivered four lectures which refered to:

• the use of platelet concentrate and growth factors in hair transplant surgery,
• hair restoration surgeries in extensive hair loss of head region,
• the usefulness of measuring procedures of moving head skin in hair transplantation surgeries,
• the evaluation of various techniques of stitching the donor area –the research was conducted in several centers in the world; the following doctors participated in the research: Bessam Farjo, Nilofer Farjo, Alex Ginsburg, Samir Ibrahim and Małgorzata Kolenda. Dr. Kolasiński was the coordinator. The results suggest that the best method to stitch a wound of the donor area is the so called Tichophytic Closure technique with deepitalization of the lower edge of the wound.

It has been already a tradition that the sessions of the International Society finish with a formal dinner during which various awards and recognitions are given. We were pleased that this year Dr. David Perez-Meza, a recent guest at our clinic, was awarded the Platinum Follicle Prize.

Las Vegas is not only a world center of gambling. One can also see some performances which are huge artistic events. Certainly, Cirque du Soleil is one of that kind. Such mastery of form, performance, unusual ideas and music will surely stay in memory forever. It is worth following the activities of this group especially that this theater visits Europe, too.

It took a year to prepare the first ever session on hair restoration surgery in Poland. It was held during the Congress of Plastic Surgeons in Bydgoszcz organized by the Polish Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. Among the guests invited to participate in this unusual event one could find Dr. Ronald Shapiro (USA), Dr. David Perez-Meza (USA), Dr. Bessam Farjo (Great Britain), Dr. Małgorzata Kolenda and Dr. Jerzy Kolasiński. The lectures covered both current knowledge on hair restoration surgery (Dr. Ronald Shapiro – Hair Transplantation – State of the Art) and the most recent achievements in this field of medicine (Dr. Bessam Farjo – The Progress in Hair Follicles Cloning, Dr. David Perez-Meza – Laser and Growth Factor Applications to Intensify the Hair Growth). Dr. Kolasinski made a summary of the entire session providing a lecture on hair restoration surgery in everyday practice of a plastic surgeon. Another interesting aspect of the Congress was a round table conference which allowed the participants and lecturers to exchange their opinions. Dr. Samir Ibrahim (Saudi Arabia) also took part in the conference and shared his huge experience in reconstructive treatment of facial hair in men with the participants.

The fact that the issue of hair restoration surgery was included in the program of the Congress of the Polish Society of Plastic, Reconstruction and Esthetic Surgery proves its increasing role in Poland.

On Wednesday, Septmeber 19, the classes started with a series of lectures covering all basic issues encompassing the reasons of baldness, conservative treatment, surgery qualification, surgical technique and the treatment of complications. The lecturers did their best to impart their knowledge to the participants. The following days the participants could observe life demonstrations of particular surgeries. The cases were assiduously chosen so that the doctors could learn surgery techniques of treating androgenic baldness both in men and women. There was also enough time to observe correction surgeries of scars. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) – recently the most popular technique – was presented as well.

The workshops became a great opportunity for the participants to learn the novelties in hair restoration surgeries as well as to meet personally world leaders in this discipline.

The team of our doctors presented six papers on plastic surgery and anti-aging medicine.

Jerzy Kolasiński, M.D., delivered a lecture on our experience in the field of breast round and anatomical prosthesis.

Małgorzata Kolenda, M.D., presented three papers. Her first paper comprised of a summary of the clinic’s long experience in hair reconstrucion surgery. Then, she presented the results of pilot research on the application of platelet concentrate in the process of wounds healing, whereas the third paper concerned the strategy of surgical treatment of gynecomastia applied in our clinic.

Anna Modelska-Ziółkiewicz, M.D. presented two papers, both on anti-aging medicine.

The papers generated a huge amount of interest among the symposium participants.

Such meetings provide an opportunity to learn what other specialists experience is as well as they are a good chance to share with ones own comments and observations, but most of all to meet up with a lot of friends and interesting people.

The prominent guests well-known in the plastic surgery community, namely Daniel C.Baker, MD (USA), Catherine Bergeret-Galley (France), Thomas M. Biggs (USA), Javier de Benito (Spain) and Per Heden (Sweden) delivered their lectures.

Jerzy Kolasiński, MD, presented his two papers as well. This well-experienced specialist (within the scope of his studies one may distinguish the treatment of different types of baldness and the use of breast implants) shared his practical knowledge with other Symposium participants. His lectures aroused a huge interest.

The Symposium gala evening held on March 14 surprised everyone since a dancing course was organized then. Kolasinski together with his wife, Elzbieta, unexpectedly were ranked second. This year the Symposium hosts guaranteed not only brand new surgical knowledge but also many unforgettable memories.

Dr Farjo provided a lecture on the latest research in the field of hair follicles cloning, whereas dr Kolasiński discussed the algorithm to deal with various types of baldness. The course arouse a huge interest among Italian doctors. However, apart from the doctors, a considerable large group of leading journalists from Rome and Milan participated in the course.

An excellent ambience of the session and numeorus social meetings constitute a fixed element of the courses organized in such a beautiful and hospitable country like Italy.

The 14th Congress of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) was held on October 18-22, 2006 in San Diego, California, USA. This year a record number of participants, i.e. more than 600 doctors, assistants and managers specializing in hair restoration surgeries, arrived at the Del Coronado Hotel. The session was preceded by numerous workshop and organizational meetings. On Tuesday, October 17 a training on media contacts was held for a small group of doctors, including Dr Jerzy Kolasiński.

Another day started with the Global Convocation, i.e. the meeting of the representatives of the countries within ISHRS. Poland was represented by the president of the Polish Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, namely Małgorzata Kolenda, M.D. The participants exchanged their views on the latest advancements in this field of medicine in their countries. On the same day the ISHRS board meeting was held, in which Jerzy Kolasiński took part. During the session lasting many hours a wide spectrum of topics concerning society activities was discussed. The following days abounded in sessions and courses as well. Professor Maria Siemionow, the Director of the experimental team of plastic surgeons of the Cleveland Clinic, was a guest of honor of the Congress. She delivered a lecture on face and head skin transplantation. It generated huge interest among the session participants. Moreover, the luxury interiors of the del Coronado Hotel renown from the movie Some Like it Hot and the Pacific Ocean in the vicinity of the hotel made the atmosphere of the meeting even more exciting.

During the Gala Dinner, the fact that the team led by Jerzy Kolasiński was awarded a grant to conduct further research on assessing various techniques of the donor region supply in hair transplantation surgery appeared to be a nice surprise. Malgorzata Kolenda is also a member of this international group.

Finally, numerous discussions held at the Congress resulted in the decission to conduct the first European workshops of ISHRS in the Kolasinski Clinic in Spetmeber 2007.
