3D imaging system is the latest product launched by Canfield facilitating the analysis of face and the whole body including breast.

3D Imaging System consists of two basic elements: a set of high-resolution cameras and an image processor. The final effect comes not only as a 3D image of the body, which may be analyzed from all perspectives, but the system also allows for size and volume analyses. It is especially important in the analysis of the human face as well as the body profile, chest and breast.

Due to highly advanced technology we can simulate and preview feasible outcomes of plastic surgery or esthetic procedures.

Additionally, whatever takes place on the computer screen is reversible and may help patients define precisely the outcomes they want to achieve.

When a proper module is set and patients wear specially designed glasses, they may see their face as well as the whole body as a 3D image. It gives them a unique opportunity to look at themselves just as other people perceive them in three dimensions every day.

The procedure starts with taking a precise picture of the patient. The six high-resolution cameras capture the image obtained from different projections, which is next processed by the imaging system.

The next step involves introducing a number of orientation points which will facilitate a more exact analysis of the patient’s appearance and calibrate the image in life-size. In other words, we will receive a linear and volumetric analysis of face and the whole body. This will be helpful in planning precisely corrective procedures.

An extremely important element necessary to plan the medical treatment is the specification of the patient’s expectations. The methods applied so far in terms of doctor-patient communication have not been accurate enough. #d imagining system allows for previewing the surgery outcomes. By the same token it provides patients with a unique opportunity to verify their own expectations and the final effects which the supposed surgery may bring. Therefore, instead of making the decision somehow blindly, they may see their own face or breast after the surgery without a scratch. In this case, however, what we mean is a totally reversible, virtual surgery.

It should be remembered that the application of computer simulation does not guarantee specific changes and is used only to demonstrate the patient feasible effects of appearance modifications the surgery may bring about.

The real-life operation may hide many surprises and its outcome may slightly differ from the computer preview.

3D imaging system plays a huge role in the selection of suitable breast implants. Due to the precise analysis of breast shape and size, the surgery may be much better planned. The vast majority of women suffer from different degrees of chest and breast asymmetry. Sometimes, it is only the 3D examination that lets them realize the existence of such defects. The size and volume analyses of such parameters improves significantly the quality of surgeon’s work, who may choose proper breast implants with precision. The data base of 3D imaging system stores a few hundred of round and anatomical breast implants manufactured by world leading producers. 3D suggests such implants which are recommended for a particular patient. At the same time the preview of expected results is played in 3D format.

The post 3D Imaging System – Your View, Your Choice first appeared on Kolasiński Clinic.

Soaking the operated area with right fluid significantly reduces intra-operative bleeding

In recent years an increase in the occurrence of male breast hypertrophy called gynecomastia has been observed. It may manifest itself in three forms: adipose, glandular and mixed. The most efficient method of treating adipose gynecomastia is by liposuction. If there is a glandular component present (mixed or glandular gynecomastia) it is necessary to excise glandular tissue, with the resulting scarring of the areola. The latest method of surgical treatment of glandular gynecomastia permits excision of the entire lesion through a small incision in the submammary area. The small size of the incision (approx. 3 mm) and its location make the scar undetectable.

Indications

Suction of adipose tissue with a thin cannule

The most common form of gynecomastia is its mixed form. It is not always possible to precisely diagnose what proportion of the lesion the mammary gland is. Therefore each individual case of gynecomastia is a potential indication for no-scar treatment with the shave method. Also repeat procedures following an earlier breast liposuction can be performed using this method. However, corrections of poorly performed gynecomastia excisions usually require a more individualized approach and involve surgical incision within the areola.

Procedure

Suction of adipose tissue with a thin cannule

Corrective gynecomastia is performed under general anesthesia. Typically the first step of the procedure is suction of breast adipose tissue. It is carried out using tumescence method (wet), which significantly reduces intra-operative bleeding (Photo 1). A micro cannule to remove adipose tissue is inserted through a small incision of about 3 mm in the sub-mammary area (Photo 2). Following the liposuction the surgeon decides whether it is necessary to remove glandular tissue (Photo 3). If so, then a device (shaver) is inserted through the same incision to excise glandular tissue (Photo 4). Usually a thin layer of glandular tissue is left directly under the areola to ensure a natural and esthetic cosmetic effect in the area. In some cases it is possible to examine microscopically the excised tissues. Then the small sub-mammary incision is closed with steri-strips. Occasionally a single suture may be applied. Also occasionally a thin bulb drain is left in the operated area. In some cases (e.g. with heavy bleeding)it may be necessary to expand the procedure by incising the areola. Postoperatively the patient is fitted with a compression vest on the chest.

Postoperatively

Glandular tissue is being removed with the shaver

Patients remain in the clinic one day following the procedure. Usually they are able to get up and about in the evening. If a bulb drain has been applied, it is removed within 24 hours postoperatively. Edema in the operated area and localized bruises may subsist for up to a month post-op. Also a compression vest is recommended for a month although it may be removed for baths. If the wound has been closed with steri-strips then patients do not need to come for follow-up after one week. One week is also the length of time after which sporting activities may be undertaken. The final effect is usually achieved three months after the procedure. After that period it is recommended to report to the clinic for treatment evaluation.

Advantages of the shave method

Precise removal of male breast hypertrophy – gynecomastia

The entire procedure is performed via a small incision in the sub-mammary area, leaving an undetectable scar

It is possible to microscopically examine the excised glands

Short convalescence period

No need for follow-up visits immediately after procedure

Disadvantages of the shave method

A small risk of bleeding in the operated area necessitating the use of bulb drains

In some cases it may be necessary to expand the procedure with incision in the areola area.

About the procedure

Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of woman’s breast for a number of reasons:

to enhance the body contour of woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small

to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy

to balance a difference in breast size

as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery

By inserting an implant behind each breast, surgeons are able to increase a woman’s bustline by one or more bra cup sizes. If you’re considering breast augmentation, this will give you a basic understanding of the procedure – when it can help, how it’s performed, and what results you can expect. It can’t answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please ask our surgeon if there is anything you don’t understand about the procedure.

The best candidates for breast augmentation

Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with our surgeon.

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you’re physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

Types of implants

A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or a salt-water solution known as saline.

Risk associated with the surgery

Breast augmentation is relatively straightforward. But as with any operation, there are risks associated with surgery and specific complications associated with this procedure.

The most common problem, capsular contracture, occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten. This squeezing of the soft implant can cause the breast to feel hard. Capsular contracture can be treated in several ways, and sometimes requires either removal or “scoring” of the scar tissue, or perhaps removal or replacement of the implant.
As with any surgical procedure, excessive bleeding following the operation may cause some swelling and pain. If excessive bleeding continues, another operation may be needed to control the bleeding and remove the accumulated blood.

A small percentage of women develop an infection around an implant. This may occur at any time, but is most often seen within a week after surgery. In some cases, the implant may need to be removed for several months until the infection clears. A new implant can then be inserted.

Some women report that their nipples become oversensitive, undersensitive, or even numb. You may also notice small patches of numbness near your incisions. These symptoms usually disappear within time, but may be permanent in some patients.

There is no evidence that breast implants will affect fertility, pregnancy, or your ability to nurse. If, however, you have nursed a baby within the year before augmentation, you may produce milk for a few days after surgery. This may cause some discomfort, but can be treated with medication prescribed by your doctor.

Occasionally, breast implants may break or leak. Rupture can occur as a result of injury. If a saline-filled implant breaks, the implant deflate in a few hours and the salt water will be harmlessly absorbed by the body.

If a brake occur in a gel-filled implant, however, one of two things may occur. It the shell breaks but the scar capsule around the implant does not, you may not detect any change. If the scar also breaks or tears, especially following extreme pressure, silicone gel may move into surrounding tissue. The gel may collect in the breast and cause a new scar to form around it, or it may migrate to another area of the body. There may be a change in the shape or firmness of the breast. Both types of breaks may require a second operation and replacement of the leaking implant.

While there is no evidence that breast implants cause breast cancer, they may change the way mammography is done to detect cancer.

When you request a routine mammogram, be sure to go to a radiology center where doctor are experienced in the special techniques required to get a reliable x-ray of a breast with an implant. Additional views will be required. Ultrasound examination may be of benefit in some women with implants to detect breast lumps or to evaluate the implant

While the majority of women do not experience these complications, you should discuss each of them with our surgeon to make sure you understand the risk and consequences of breast augmentation.

Planning your surgery

In your initial consultation, our surgeon will evaluate your health and explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for you, based on the condition of your breasts and skin tone. If your breasts are sagging, our doctor may also recommend a breast lift.

Be sure to discuss your expectations frankly with our surgeon. He or she will be equally frank with you, describing your alternatives and the risks and limitations of each. Our surgeon will fully inform you about the implants.

Be Sure to tell our surgeon if you smoke, and if you’re taking any medications, vitamins, or other drugs.

Our surgeon will also explain the type of anesthesia to be used, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, and the costs involved.

Preparing for your surgery

Our surgeon will give you instructions to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications.

While making preparations, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home next day after your surgery and to help you out for a few days, if needed.

Types of anesthesia

Breast augmentation is performed with a general anesthesia, so you’ll sleep through the entire operation.

The surgery

The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy and our surgeon’s recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit. Every effort will be made to assure that the incision is placed so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as possible.

Working through the incision, the surgeon will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoral muscle). The implants are then centered beneath your nipples.

We believe that putting the implants behind your chest muscle may reduce the potential for capsular contracture. This placement may also interfere less with breast examination by mammogram than if the implant is placed directly behind the breast tissue. Placement behind the muscle however, may be more painful for a few days after surgery than placement directly under breast tissue.

You’ll want to discuss the pros and cons of these alternatives with our doctor before surgery to make sure you fully understand the implications of the procedure he or she recommends for you.

The surgery usually takes one to two hours to complete. Stitches are used to close the incisions, which may be taped for greater support.

Drainage tubes are used for one day following the surgery.

After your surgery

You’ll likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you’ll be up and around in 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by our doctor.

You should wear bra as directed by our surgeon – usually four weeks. You may also experience a burning sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as bruising fades.

Your stitches will come in a week, but the swelling in your breasts may take three to five weeks to disappear.

Getting back to normal

You should be able to return to work within a few days, depending on the level of activity required for your job.

Follow our surgeon’s advice on when to begin exercises and normal activities. Your breasts will probably be sensitive to direct stimulation for two to three weeks, so you should avoid much physical contact. After that, breast contact is fine once your breasts are no longer sore, usually three to four weeks after surgery.

Your scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks. Then they may remain the same size for several months, or even appear to widen. After several months, your scars will begin to fade, although they will never disappear completely.

Routine mammograms should be continued after breast augmentation for women who are in the appropriate age group. Although the mammographic doctor should use a special technique to assure that you get a reliable reading, as discussed earlier.

Your new look

For many women, the result of breast augmentation can be satisfying, even exhilarating, as they learn to appreciate their fuller appearance.

Regular examination by our surgeon and routine sonography for all patients once a year or mammograms for those in the appropriate age groups at prescribed intervals will help assure that any complications, if they occur, can be detected early and treated.

Your decision to have breast augmentation is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it. If you’ve met your goals, then your surgery is a success.

If you’re considering a breast lift

Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breast. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola. If your breasts are small or have lost volume – for example, after pregnancy – breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.

The goal of breast reduction is primarily focused on relieving patients of the physical disability created by their large, ptotic breast. Results of this procedure were far from ideal, however, and sometimes the price women paid for reduced breast size was a flattend breast contour and objectionable long scars, particularly along the inframammary fold, below the areola, and in the lateral breast area.

Vertical mammaplasty is one of the latest advances in the quest to improve breast reduction results. Based on a central and lower breast reduction with the areola carried on a superior pedicle, this technique leaves a circumferential scar around the areola and a vertical scar from the areola to the submammary fold with no horizontal submammary extension.

If you’re considering a breast lift or breast reduction, this text will give you a basic understanding of these procedures – when it can help, how it’s performed, and what results you can expect. It can’t answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please be sure to ask our doctor if there is anything about the procedure you don’t understand.

The best candidates for breast lift and breast reduction

A breast lift or breast reduction can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with our surgeon.

The best candidates for mastopexy and breast reduction are healthy, emotionally-stable women who are realistic about what the surgery can accomplish. The best results are usually achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts.

Many women seek mastopexy because pregnancy and nursing have left them with stretched skin and less volume in their breasts. However, if you’re planning to have more children, it may be a good idea to postpone your breast lift. While there are no special risks that affect future pregnancies (for example, mastopexy usually doesn’t interfere with breast-feeding), pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts again and offset the results of the procedure.

Uncertainty and risk

A breast lift and breast reduction are not a simple operations, but they are normally safe when performed by a qualified surgeon. Nevertheless , as with any surgery, there is always a possibility of complications or a reaction to the anesthesia. Bleeding and infection following a breast lift or breast reduction are uncommon, but they can cause scars to widen. You can reduce your risks by closely following our physician’s advice both before and after surgery.

Mastopexy and breast reduction do leave noticeable, permanent scars, although they’ll be covered by your bra or bathing suit. (Poor healing and wider scars are more common in smokers.)

The procedure can also leave you with unevenly positioned nipples, or a permanent loss of feeling in your nipples or breasts.

Planning your surgery

In your initial consultation, it’s important to discuss your expectations frankly with our surgeon, and to listen to his or her opinion. Every patient and every physician, as well has a different view of what is a desirable size and shape for breasts.

The surgeon will examine your breast and measure them while you’re sitting or standing. He or she will discuss the variables that may affect the procedure such as your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin and whether an implant is advisable. You should also discuss where the nipple and areola will be positioned; they’ll be moved higher during the procedure, and should be approximately even with the crease beneath your breast.

Our surgeon should describe the procedure in detail, explaining its risks and limitations and making sure you understand the scarring that will result. He or she should also explain the anesthesia to be used, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, and the costs involved.

Don’t hesitate to ask our doctor any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results.

Preparing for your surgery

Depending on your age and family history, our surgeon may require you to have a mammogram before surgery. You’ll also get specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications.

While you’re making preparations, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery and to help you out for a few days if needed.

Types of anesthesia

Breast lifts are usually performed under general anesthesia, which means you’ll sleep through the operation.

The surgery

Mastopexy usually takes two to three hours, breast reduction takes three to four hours. Techniques vary, but the most common procedure involves vertical incision following the natural contour of the breast.

The incision outlines the area from which breast skin will be removed and defines the new location for the nipple. With breast reduction the lower half of the breast is excised and the lateral pillars are sutured together below the new site of the areola. When the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are moved to the higher position. The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches are usually located around the areola and in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area to the lower crease of the breast.

Some patients, especially those with relatively small breast and minimal sagging, may be candidates for modified procedures requiring less extensive incisions. One such procedure is concentric mastopexy, in which circular incisions are made around the areola, and a doughnut-shaped area of skin is removed.

If you’re having an implant inserted along with your breast lift, it will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall.

After your surgery

After surgery, you’ll wear a sport’s bra over gauze dressings. Your breasts will be bruised, swollen, and uncomfortable for a day or two, but the pain shouldn’t be severe. Any discomfort you do feel can be relieved with medications prescribed by our surgeon.

You’ll need to wear the bra around the clock for three to four weeks. The stitches will be removed after a week or two.

You can expect some loss of feeling in your nipples and breast skin, caused by the swelling after surgery. The numbness usually fades as the swelling subsides over the next six weeks or so. In some patients , however, it may last a year or more, and occasionally it may be permanent.

Getting back to normal

Healing is a gradual process. Although you may be up and about in a day or two, don’t plan on returning to work for a week or more, depending on how you feel. And avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks. If you have any unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate do call our surgeon.

Our surgeon will give you detailed instructions for resuming your normal activities. You may be instructed to avoid sex for a week or more, and to avoid strenuous sports for about a month. After that, you can resume these activities slowly. If you become pregnant, the operation should not affect your ability to breast-feed, since your milk ducts and nipples will be left intact.

Your new look

Our surgeon will make every effort to make your scars as inconspicuous as possible. Still, it’s important to remember that mastopexy and breast reduction scars are extensive and permanent. They often remain lumpy and red for months, then gradually become less obvious, sometimes eventually fading to thin white lines. Fortunately, the scars can usually be placed so that you can wear even low-cut tops.

You should also keep in mind that a breast lift and breast reduction won’t keep you firm forever – the effects of gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight fluctuations will eventually take their toll again. Women who have implants along with their breast lift may find the results last longer.

Your satisfaction with a breast lift or breast reduction is likely to be greater if you understand the procedure thoroughly and if your expectations are realistic.

Male breast reduction

Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from Greek words for „women-like breast”. It′s actually quite common and it may affect only one breast or both. Gynecomastia occurs in the adolescence at young boys as well as in male′s menopauses at men at older ages. In both cases we have to deal with overgrowth of gland tissue. The growth of adipose tissue accompanied by obesity can be one of the reasons of gynecomastia at various ages. There is also gynecomastia that occurs together with some genetic diseases as the Klinefelter′s syndrome as well as other diseases related to gender hypoplasia (hypogonadism), endocrinological diseases as well as post alcoholic liver cirrhosis.

Hyperplasia i.e. smooth growth of gland tissue consists in moderate proliferation of the canals, the so called out-taking canals of the breast and the growth of the fibrous tissue. It is commonly believed that the factor responsible for stimulating this process are estrogen circulating in blood or similar to estrogen substances.

For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.

If you′re considering surgery to correct gynecomastia, this information will give you basic understanding of the procedure – how it is performed, and what results you can expect. It can′t answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances.

Indications

Surgery to correct gynecomastia can be performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any ages. The best candidates for surgery have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to the body′s new contours.

Surgery may be discouraged for obese men, or for overweight men who have not first attempted to correct the problem with exercise or weight loss. Also, individuals who drink alcohol or smoke, use drugs along with anabolic steroids are usually not considered good candidates for surgery because these may cause gynecomastia. Therefore, patients are first directed to stop the use of these drugs to see if the breast fullness will diminish before surgery is considered an option.

Complications and risks

When male breast-reduction surgery is performed by a qualified surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. These include infection, skin injury, bleeding, reaction to anesthesia, and fluid loss or accumulation. The procedure may also result in noticeable scars, permanent pigment changes in the breast area, or slightly mismatched breasts or nipples. If asymmetry is significant, a second procedure may be performed to remove additional tissue.

The temporary effects of breast reduction include loss of breast sensation or numbness, which may last up to a year.

Medical consultation

The initial consultation with our surgeon is very important. Our surgeon will need a complete your medical history. First, our surgeon will examine your breast and check for causes of the gynecomastia, such as impaired liver function, use of estrogen-containing medications, or anabolic steroids. If a medical problem is the suspected cause, you may be referred to an appropriate specialist.

Our surgeon may, in extreme cases, also recommend a ultrasonograph examination, mammogram, or breast x-ray. This will not only rule out the very small possibility of breast cancer, but will reveal the breast′s composition. Once our surgeon knows how much fat and glandular tissue is contained within the breasts, he or she can choose a surgical approach to best suit your needs.

Our surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating, drinking, and taking certain vitamins and medications.

Smokers should plan to stop smoking for a minimum of one or two weeks before surgery and during recovery. Smoking decreases circulation and interferes with proper healing.

The procedure

Surgery for gynecomastia is usually performed as a inpatient procedure, and overnight hospital stay is recommended. The surgery itself takes about an hour and a half to complete. However, more extensive procedures may take longer.

The breast gland in gynecomastia consist of gland and adipose elements and the surgical procedure depends on the excessive amount of one or the other. In the case when adipose tissue is bigger, it is enough to remove the excessive of the tissue by liposuction. However, when gland tissue is bigger, the surgical procedure should consist in removal of the whole gland. In this case liposuction is ineffective.

Nowadays thanks to the advancements in plastic surgery, the surgical treatment of gynecomastia consists in the first stage on suction of adipose tissue and finishes with it if the growth does not refer to gland tissue.

If liposuction is used to remove fat, the cannula is usually inserted through the incisions in submammal fold. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the breast enlargement, it will be excised, or cut out, with a scalpel. The excision may be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction. In a typical procedure, an incision is made in an inconspicuous location – on the edge of the areola or in the under arm area or a small incision in submammal fold. Working through the incision, the surgeon cuts away the excess glandular tissue and form the sides and bottom of the breast.

In extreme cases where large amounts of fat or glandular tissue have been removed, skin may not adjust well to the new smaller breast contour. In these cases, excess skin may have to be removed to allow the removing skin to firmly re-adjust to the new breast contour.

Sometimes, a small drain is inserted through a separate incision to draw off excess fluids. Once closed, the incisions are usually covered with a dressing. The chest may be wrapped to keep the skin firmly in place.

After every surgery the removed tissue is examined histopathologically to exclude neoplastic changes.

Recovery time

Whether you′ve had excision with a scalpel or liposuction, you will feel some discomfort for a few days after surgery, However, discomfort can be controlled with medications prescribed by our surgeon.

You will be swollen and bruised for awhile. To help reduce swelling, you′ll be instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for four weeks. Although the worst of your swelling will dissipate in the first few weeks, it may be three months or more before the final results of your surgery are apparent.

It the meantime, it is important to begin getting back to normal. You′ll be encouraged to begin walking around on the day of surgery, and can return to work when you feel well enough – which could be as early as a day or two after surgery. Any stitches will generally be removed about one week following the procedure.

Our surgeon may advise you to avoid sexual activity for a week or two, and heavy exercise and spot for about four weeks. In general, it will take about a month before you are back to all of your normal activities.

You should also avoid exposing the resulting scars to the sun for at least six months. Sunlight can permanently affect the skin′s pigmentation, causing the scar to turn dark. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use a strong sunblock.

Gynecomastia surgery can enhance your appearance and self-confidence, but it won′t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them frankly with our surgeon.

The results of the procedure are significant and permanent. If your expectations are realities, chances are good that you′ll be very satisfied with your new looks.

The most frequently performed surgery correcting breast is undoubtedly their augmentation with implants. Still, reduction mammaplasty of overly large breast is not uncommon. According to the American Association of Plastic Surgeons 80 thousand women underwent breast reduction surgeries in the United States in 2009. The decision is usually motivated by the fact that a considerable breast overdevelopment is an important, if not the most important, issue for women suffering from this anomaly. Nowadays commonly used surgical techniques allow to achieve satisfying results. Obviously, the procedure of reducing and uplifting breast entails certain consequences, namely more extensive scars than in the case of breast augmentation. On the other hand, the number of advantages resulting from reduction mammaplasty is relatively huge, which makes this procedure attractive for women wrestling with this problem. The most common benefits of breast reduction include:

Substantial improvement in posture and the reduction of neck, back and loin pains

According to the research by Dr. Collins, 35% of women who underwent reduction mammaplasty reported the remission of loin pain. Similar results are provided by Dr. Chao, who emphasizes that the majority of women noticed a significant improvement in their posture and the relief of troublesome pains of their neck and back. The mammary gland reduction results in lowering the center of gravity, and simultaneously decreasing the necessity to maintain constant muscle tension of the neck and back, which is usually the source of persistent pain in these regions.

Reduction of persistent headaches

Reduction mammaplasty significantly reduces the incidence of headaches and migraines. It is estimated that as many as 90% of women suffer from such troubles. According to Dr. Ducic, as many as 50% of women who underwent breast reduction procedure reported a relief or significant reduction of headaches and migraines.

Improved lung function and efficiency

According to the research by Dr Starley, breast reduction surgery results in a substantial improvement in lung ventilation. It is extremely important in the treatment of breathing problems during sleep. Also, the surgery influences positively the general health condition of the operated women.

Improved prevention of oncological diseases

After reduction mammaplasty women will be able to perform easily breast self-examinations which may facilitate the early detection of breast lesions dangerous to health. Moreover, removing a significant part of breast diminishes the area endangered by breast cancer. It is confirmed by routine microscopic examinations of excised breast fragments, which happen to be occasionally diagnosed with malignant cancer. Also a number of statistical research revealed reduced incidence of breast cancer among women who underwent breast reduction surgery earlier. Dr. Tarone even recommends reduction mammaplasty for women who belong to the group of increased risk for breast cancer.

Improved fitness

Overly large breast definitively can limit women’s physical activity. Obviously, reducing the size of breast makes any form of physical activity much easier. The research by Dr. Boschert proved a significant increase in the frequency of sport activities. Similar observations were published by Dr. Brown who emphasized that 100% of women took up more intensive physical exercises after breast reduction surgery. Its influence on their body weight was overwhelming. The surgery also increased women’s satisfaction with a smaller clothes size. Hence, the conclusion should be drawn not to treat obesity as a contraindication to reduction mammaplasty but, just the opposite, to treat this surgical intervention as a key element stimulating women to reduce their body weight.

Improvement in eating disorders symptoms

Extensive breast growth very often drives women to overeat in order to decrease the disproportions between the upper and lower parts of the body. But, quite opposite situations also happen, i.e. limiting excessive consumption of calories in order to reduce breast size. That is the easiest way to such disorders as bulimia nervosa. Breast reduction surgeries result in solving such problems. According to Dr. Losee’s research, within 10 years after reduction mammaplasty the symptoms of bulimia subsided at all women suffering from this disease.

Decrease in anxiety neurosis and depression

Almost one third of women with overly large breast suffers from anxiety neurosis and depression. The research by Dr. Chahraoui confirmed a significant decrease in situational and personal anxiety neurosis in the case of women who underwent breast reduction surgery. Such changes went hand in hand with a considerable improvement in self-assessment of the women’s body shape. What is even more important, Dr. Saariniemi proved that this type of positive changes in the minds of the operated women is permanent.

Self-esteem improvement

Reduction mammaplasty significantly improves the level of women’s self-evaluation. Using Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale, Dr. Mallo pointed a gradual improvement in the self-esteem of women who underwent breast reduction surgery as soon as one month after the surgery, and the condition of permanent improvement after 4 months. Similar conclusions can be found in Dr. Turhan-Haktanir’s research, who additionally records a considerable improvement in women’s temperament after breast reduction surgery.

Better quality of life

Reduction mammaplasty significantly improves the quality of women’s life. Numerous surveys indicate that all parameters referring to the evaluation of life standards of the operated women improved considerably. The women felt more feminine, were eager to form new acquaintances, emphasized smaller problems in professional environment and less embarrassment in intimate situations.

Improvement in psychosexual functions

Dr Guthrie emphasizes in his research that as many as 80% of women with overly large breast reports sexual disturbances. Such women do not tolerate touching their breast by their partners. Breast reduction surgeries release women from such inhibitions and, additionally, improve the level of satisfaction with sexual contacts.

Improved esthetics in breast

Since breast reduction surgery improves body proportions, it should also be considered in terms of esthetic categories. What Dr. Borkenhagen used in his research was a photography test. The patients were to color these parts of their bodies which were improved in their opinions. Surprisingly, after reduction mammaplasty women positively evaluated not only corrected breast but also other parts of their bodies. Dr. Godwin, however, used the comparison test for patients and four doctors. The results showed a much better and more positive evaluation of the breast made by the patients after breast reduction surgery than the one made by the doctors themselves who performed surgeries.

The conclusion to be drawn is that obviously reduction mammaplasty brings more benefits than it can be assumed on the basis of the simple fact of breast reduction. Undeniably, there are positive health effects, however, the changes referring to all aspects of the quality of women’s life are equally important. Such awareness may be helpful in deciding on breast correction surgery.

Breast augmentation using breast implants is currently the most frequently performed surgical procedure in esthetic surgery. In 2010 there were more than 318 thousand such surgeries performed in the USA alone. One of the most frequent surgical complication is connected with the development of a fibrous capsule around the implant. According to different research papers, the capsule is formed at 4-5% of the patients within the first two years after the surgery. Over a few dozen years the risk applies to around 7% of the patients with breast implants. Although the reason for developing fibrous capsules around implants is not precisely explained, still there exist numerous factors which may bring about the formation of capsules. Apparently innocent contact of the implant surface with Staphylococcus epidermidis, which occur naturally on the human skin, seems to be one of the reasons. However, there are some regions on the human body where the bacterial colonization is higher, which, in turn, increases the risk of developing the capsule around a breast implant. This phenomenon was described by doctor Jeffrey M. Jacobson in the article published in the May issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal 2012. He noticed the importance of the surgical incision through which a breast implant is inserted in the process of developing the capsule around such an implant. His research also proved that in the case of the inframammary fold incision, such a complication occurs at only 0.5% of the patients, whereas if the incision is made around the breast aureole, the risk of the capsule formation increases to 2.4%, and as far as the cut around the armpit is concerned, up to 6.4%! So, the risk of developing the capsule around the implant is 13 times higher in the case of the incision around the armpit and 5 times higher in the incision made around the breast aureole. The reason for the higher capsule incidence in the case of incisions made around the armpit and breast aureole is, according to Dr Jacobson, the increased contact of the implant surface with Staphyloccocus epidermidis. Their presence in the milk ducts of the mammary gland as well as in the ducts of sweat glands in the armpit constitute a real threat for the implants inserted to enlarge breast. Additionally, there exist many other factors increasing the risk of developing the capsule around the breast implant such as: implant location or its surface – says doctor Jacobson. Both in his research and in other reports it is emphasized that a textured surface of implants and their location under the breast muscle as in the Dual Plane procedure may decrease the formation of the capsule.

Even though there still exist some favorable locations for surgical incisions in breast augmentation surgeries, the fact of lower risk of this complication and the application of inframammary fold incision constitute a big argument in favor this type of the surgical cut.
